The picaresque steps: As Alfred Hitchcock himself described The 39 Steps it is a “film of episodes.” He and Charles Bennett constructed a picaresque narrative, with a reluctant hero moving from one scene and one locale to the next, getting into (and out of) scrape after scrape, until the climax.
